Why Homemade Skincare Products Are Cool

I began Mukti Organics 11 years ago in my own kitchen.

I couldn’t find any organic skincare products I liked back then and I wanted to make products for my clients, friends and family that were pure and actually worked.

Even though I now have a comprehensive skincare range, which took many years of research to develop and perfect, I still think people would be better off making their own skincare products at home rather than use commercial skincare products if they contain synthetic chemicals.

You can tailor the ingredients to your particular skin type, and experiment with essential oils to achieve natural fragrances that really resonate with you.

It’s easy to Google ‘skincare recipes’ and make your own, but the problem with homemade recipes is that they oxidise quickly, so you can only keep them for a day or two.

If you don’t have time to be concocting your own skincare products every couple of days, you can alternate between DIY products and an organic range like ours.

Our formulas contain the kinds of fresh ingredients you’d use yourself at home, but with an important distinction: we know how to naturally preserve our products so they last 18-30 months (if stored under 30 degrees Celsius and out of direct sunlight).

Bacteria and mould cultures have a tendency to grow in any environment or microclimate where there is a presence of water, and all living organisms have an expiration date. To prolong this process we use a synergistic combination of plant-based preservatives that are effective in low doses and in 99.9% of cases do not create skin sensitivities or allergic reactions.

A lot of companies opt for cheap (and toxic) preservatives like parabens, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, phenoxyethanol and formaldehyde but we’ve never gone down that road.

Apart from our plant-based preservation system, we also introduced airless serum pump dispensers to increase the longevity of the products and minimise the risk of contamination.

Next time you buy a skincare product, ask what kind of preservatives it contains. If they’re plant-based and certified organic by a recognised organic certifying body, you’re in the clear. Anything else I would avoid like the plague as the accumulative effects of chemicals could be quite harmful to your health.

By all means, try experimenting with making your own skincare products if you enjoy it and have the time. Drop me a line and let me know how you go.
