Cleansing facial skin: why you should NEVER use soap

Never use soap when cleansing facial skin

There’s nothing like washing your face with good old-fashioned soap and water to give your skin that squeaky clean feeling right? Wrong!

I shake my head in dismay when someone tells me they wash their face with soap. Why?

Because most soap has a very high pH level, which means it’s very alkaline and drying. So using soap is one of the worst things you can do when cleansing facial skin.

Let’s take a quick trip back to chemistry class… stay with me here!

The pH scale is a measure of the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution. The scale goes from 1–14, with 7 being neutral (water is close to 7). The closer a substance is to 1, the more acidic it is; the closer it is to 14, the more alkaline, or ‘basic’.

The pH of skin is somewhere between 4.5 and 6, and most commercial soaps have a pH of around 9–11, so they’re highly alkaline.

What does this mean for your skin?

Well for starters, soap completely deteriorates and destroys the acid mantle (a fine, slightly acidic film on the surface of the skin acting as a barrier to bacteria, viruses and other potential contaminants that might penetrate the skin).

Translation? More alkaline skin means more bacterial growth.

Next, a message is then sent to your sebaceous glands saying, “Help! I’m as dry as the Sahara desert, I need moisture!” So the sebaceous glands start pumping out oil like an offshore oil rig.

If you then use a mineral-oil based moisturiser, the oils will combine to create a film of gunk on your face that prevents your skin from breathing properly.

You may as well get a big roll of plastic, wrap it around your face and suffocate your skin!

Can you guess what happens next? Yep, you break out in pimples and/or acne.

So, when cleansing facial skin, toss that harsh soap out and invest in a good quality, certified organic cleanser and cleanse at least once a day (preferably twice).

It may seem like hard work if you’re not in the habit of it, but it’s really no big deal to keep your cleanser in the shower and cleanse properly each day.

And remember: squeaky clean skin might feel nice and hygienic, but your skin will NOT love you for it.
