3 surprising mistakes many people make with their skincare

This may come as a surprise, but a lot of people make assumptions about what they should, or shouldn’t be doing to their skin based on incorrect information. Sometimes it’s advice shared by well-meaning friends or family. Or, it may just be incorrect skincare tips on the Internet or in magazines, written by people who don’t really know what they’re talking about.

Here are 3 mistakes I see people making fairly often:

 1. They don’t think it’s important to clean their face.

Crazy, I know! Some people just wash their faces with water or soap… splash, splash, splash, that’ll do. Water doesn’t clean the face properly, people. Even if your skin looks clear, there will be a nasty build-up of pollutants, residual oil and grime on your skin, especially if you live in the city. That, my friends, could lead to a host of skin problems like blocked pores, pimples and acne. Washing your face in soap is a big no-no. Click here to see why. Basically, if you’re not using a good cleanser, then you’re not washing your face properly. Period.

2. They use really harsh, turbo-boosted products in a desperate attempt to rid themselves of acne.

Big mistake. These dry the skin out, sending an SOS message to your oil glands that alerts them to produce more oil — which is exactly the opposite of what you want to happen if you suffer from acne. Using these products only exacerbates the problem. Acne is often hormonal, or related to diet and stress, so you need to take a holistic approach to deal with it properly. 3. They never use oils on the face.

This might sound strange, but all skin types can benefit from using oil, even oily types. It seems logical that using oil on your face will only make their skin more oily, but it’s not always the case. If you use the right oils in the right amount, particularly oils that contain essential fatty acids, they will help to hydrate and balance the sebaceous secretions. (Stay tuned for a post on facial oils soon).

OK fess up, have you done (or not done) any of these and if so, what effect has it had on your skin?
